1849. Open wreath. PCGS graded MS-62 PQ CAC Approved. Light gold toning, a lustrous coin. This smallest denomination United States gold coin was first minted in 1849. This design featured a Liberty head on the obverse while the reverse carried the denomination within a wreath. The concept of a gold dollar coin dates to 1836 when patterns were issued.
Engraver James Barton Longacre prepared the designs and made minor alterations throughout the year. This example is from the second design issued, with a noticeably small Liberty Head and an Open Wreath. Larger heads and closed wreaths are found on later issues of 1849 (PCGS # 7502) . 1853-C. NGC graded MS-62. A fully lustrorus untoned example. Only 11,515 minted. The strike on both sides of this handsome little coin is more characteristic of the P-mint issue than that usually seen weaker Mint State 1853-C specimens offered for sale. There is excellent detail on the obverse at Liberty's coronet, brow and hair bun while on the reverse the date and the second L in DOLLAR are typically weak. There are also a few isolated areas of striking incompleteness around the borders. That said, we stress that this coin is truly above par for the issue in the realm of surface preservation. The fields are satin-like to frosty--a feature that suggests careful handling since the day it reached its first owner, be he tinker, tailor, soldier, or banker. A mild unevenness in the planchet occurs at the 85 of the date which might be used as a pedigree marker. Pop 11; 18 finer. Estimated Value $4,500 - 5,000. 1854-D. NGC graded AU-58. Only 2,935 minted. Mostly untoned. The low mintage makes this date famous. This beautiful rarity sums up nicely the experience of the sale of which it is a part. The coin exhibits original satin luster on a well presented and attractive planchet with only a trace of wear on the high points of Liberty’s hair. It is the kind of coin that collectors expect to find in the grade. Elusive as a date, elusive in no uncertain terms. Even more is this true in high grades. Next, the strike. The strike is crisp in many areas, yet better than average in all others, so attention should be paid by prospective bidders. Some lack of detail may be noted at the central hair on Liberty, just below the word LIBERTY (but not on the stars). When describing the reverse, we see the usual disparity on the denticles as well as marginal weakness on the LL of DOLLAR and central part of the date. Some bidders might edge away from bidding when presented with an 1854-D gold dollar. After all, this is one of the rarest D-mint dates in the series struck at all the historic Dahlonega branch mint. Only the P-mint 1854 is at all common. However, as the population figure suggests, the coin is rather rare and deserves twice the honor because it is so fresh and lustrous looking: Pop 24; 23 finer (PCGS # 7526) . 1873 Open 3. ICG graded MS-62. Mostly untoned. The Philadelphia Mint continued to strike gold coins in 1862-79 even though the banks (as well as the Treasury Department) refused to pay them out at "par" for paper money. To acquire gold coins in those years by tendering paper dollars or by cashing a check, one had to pay a premium of anywhere from 4 to 8 percent or higher, thus $108 in paper would buy $100 face value in gold coins. The market didn't stabilize (return to par) until January 1, 1879. Estimated Value $400 - 440. View details and enlarged photos
