1892-S $10 Liberty. PCGS graded MS-63. Lovely rich golden toning. This warmly colored example displays beams of golden metallic detail in all areas, high points to the open spaces and everywhere in-between. Also, it is instructive to see that the coin was struck with preciseness only now and then found on a date in the 1890s from this branch mint. A very scarce date in the grade. 1900 $10 Liberty. NGC graded Proof 65 Ultra Cameo. A hint of light golden toning. A wonderful looking coin. Matched for color, texture, surface originality and appearance with the other denominations from this consignment, the coin is, true to form, utterly radiant! Blazing-gold mirrors with crisp definition on the frosted devices and "ultra" clean surfaces free of tarnish spots and handling marks. Definitely, a premium example of the grade. Having covered the mint bloom, we take stock of the coin's detail. Clockwork precision seen in the stars and hair curls, as well as the tiny beads which tie the hair into a bun at the back of Liberty's head. The lovelock curl is crisply detailed also. Turning next to the reverse, full razor-sharpness is also displayed: in the eagle's plumage, its feet, the shield with its horizontal lines and vertical stripes. Lastly, all letters in IN GOD WE TRUST are crisply defined. For the ordinary collector, the recent introduction of high-art methods into Proof gold issuance is sufficient to entice one to purchase a recent mint product. But to the sophisticated buyer of more refined tastes, these early pieces, with their "classic" appearance and careful attention to detail, are the crème de la crème of rare coin collecting! Only 120 proofs struck. Pop 3; 10 finer; 5 in 66; 4 in 66 Star; 1 in 67. (PCGS # 8840) .

1903 $10 Liberty. NGC graded Proof 65. NGC holder 2018839-001. A brilliant Proof with a hint of golden toning. Only 96 Proofs struck. This is a lightly toned Gem whose surfaces are saturated in pale orange-gold shades. We have no criticism about the strike, all features show exact detail that could only result from careful Proof production methods. Brilliant in finish, then, both sides achieve deep mirrored reflectivity that appears to gleam and sparkle at indirect light angles. Perhaps no more than half of the original mintage are believed extant. Pop 8; 6 finer; 5 in 66; 1 in 67. (PCGS # 8843) .

1903 $10 Liberty. PCGS graded Proof 65. Lovely rich orange toning on both sides. Very choice for the grade. This is a richly colored Gem whose surfaces are enfolded in warm embrace of orange-gold shades. We have no issue about the strike, all features possess razor-sharp detail that could only result from Proof production methods in the early 20th century. Brilliant in finish, both sides have drop-dead gorgeous deep mirrored reflectivity that appears to go to infinity at indirect light angles. One of the most affordable Tens delivered after the turn of the century, although possibly no more than half the original number are believed extant. A reverse toned area on the eagle's claw would serve as an adequate provenance marker (PCGS # 8843) .

Lot 2512
1907 $10 Indian. Wire rim, periods. NGC graded MS-66. Nice light golden toning on both sides. A lovely coin. Only 500 minted. A rare and popular transitional issue, one whose low mintage was made without intentions of circulation. Technically the Wire Rim ten is a pattern (hence, the Judd-1774 reference). This issue was the closest the mint came to producing the ten-dollar design as originally conceived by Augustus Saint-Gaudens and Theodore Roosevelt. The presently offered coin has subtleness in its lovely variegated color, patina and surface texture, and what's more, none of the often-seen small marks in the surface. No, no mischief ever occurred here! The fields as well as the devices are smooth, delightful, attractive. The finely raised die polishing lines (common to all specimens) are more pronounced on the reverse fields and overall the coin has a bright showy gleam. Pop 16; 10 finer, 2 in 66 star, 5 in 67, 2 in 68, 1 in 69 (PCGS # 8850) .

1907 $10 Indian. Wire rim, periods. PCGS graded MS-65. A very choice coin. Only 500 struck. Pleasant, almost cheery golden satin frost display lots of fresh color. One would be hard put to add more about the mint bloom. As for the strike, the coin was struck with technical exactness throughout and is a consistent quality among the surviving 1907 Wire Rim Tens.

Augustus Saint-Gaudens' so-called "Indian" Head Eagles are more properly a creation of his inventive genius having to mold itself to the structural realities of coin design. Breen described it this way: "For the new eagle design, Augustus St. Gaudens [sic] (in consultation with Pres. Theodore Roosevelt) decided to use not a standing figure but a head, feeling that the heroic effect of any standing figure, as chosen for the double eagle, would be lost in smaller diameter. The President disgusted beyond measure at what he called our 'atrociously hideous' coinage, had asked St. Gaudens to design replacements.

"The profile St. Gaudens chose originated in a figure of Nike ('Victory'), part of his Gen. Sherman Monument (1905), ultimately inspired by a Hellenistic Wingless Victory on the temple of Zeus Soter. at Pergamon. At Pres. Roosevelt's insistence, and for no other reason, St. Gaudens gave this head a nationalistic character by the absurd addition of a feathered war bonnet, such as neither Ms. Liberty nor any Native American woman would have ever worn." Pop 42; 18 finer; 15 in 66; 3 in 67. (PCGS # 8850) .

1907 $10 Indian. No Motto. PCGS graded MS-63. Light golden toning. There is a lovely interplay between orange-gold and reddish colors that give this the eye appeal of an even higher grade. For the ordinary collector, the recent introduction of the low-art methods in modern "Eagle" half ounce gold coinage pales in comparison to Saint-Gaudens' masterful use of composition and balance in his so-called Indian head design. The portrait is actually that of Liberty posing with a fashionable feathered headdress mockingly like the war bonnets worn by a few Native American chieftains (PCGS # 8852) .

1911 $10 Indian. PCGS graded MS-65 CAC Verified. Old green holder. Rich shades of golden toning. Has a great look. A lovely coin that should be in a MS-66 holder. The design of the With Motto Indian tens [1908-33] is by Charles E. Barber, after Augustus Saint-Gaudens. Aside from the addition of the motto, the surface texture is slightly more satiny and the main devices crisper in their interpretation of Saint-Gaudens' theme. The striking quality is improved over the No Motto pieces.

Coins dated 1908-11 have 46 stars on edge as before; 1912-33, 48 stars, the extra two being added to honor the admission of Arizona and New Mexico. Edges continued to be imparted by segmented (tripartite) collars. Pop 53; 19 in 66; 8 in 67. (PCGS # 8868) .
