Obverse: Laureate armored bust of Peter II facing right. From the same die as GM-5 (plate 1, #5), the unique specimen in the Hermitage. Reverse: Cross of crowned P monograms with ordinal "ii" within the angles, as the adopted design but of nicer workmanship. This specimen is well struck except for slight softness at the lower part of the uniform drapery and on the corresponding lower crown of the reverse, this a result of die mis-alignment during the striking process. The style is exceptional with lovely modeling of Peter's face, hair and cuirass. The details of the reverse, though minimal, are equally fine. There are two types of pattern ruble of Peter II, both currently unique. As indicated in its origin of pedigree from World Wide's auction XXXV, this piece was authenticated by Dr. Spassky of the Hermitage in 1984. A ruble of great beauty, one of the most important in the entire Russian series and the only pattern ruble of Peter II in private hands. Unique. PCGS graded MS-63. Estimated Value $125,000 - 200,000. Lot 1822		Russia. Ruble, 1727 (Moscow). This unusual variety of 1727 rouble is unlisted in Severin, Diakov, Bitkin and GM. It utilizes the same Moscow mint obverse as Uzdenikov's Pattern-152. Fourteen rivets are counted on the breastplate. The reverse is the wide date variety with small numerals and small crowns as seen on Saint Petersburg issues, with cross-hatching within the oval crown bases. Lot 1829		Russia. Anna Ivanovna (1693-1740). Daughter of Ivan V and a niece of Peter the Great. She was chosen by the Privy Council and made to sign a constitution modeled after Sweden's. After coming to power, she enlisted the support of the aristocracy and rescinded all prior concessions. She rejuvenated the Russian army and established the cadet corps. She intervened in the War of the Polish Succession and warred against the Turks. She also supported Russia's emerging interest in ballet. Lot 1836		Russia. Elizabeth I (1709-1762). Daughter of Peter the Great. She gained the throne by overthrowing the infant Ivan VI and his regent in a bloodless revolution, aided by the imperial guards. She sought to rid Russia of German influence and sided against Frederick II of Prussia in the Seven Years War. During her reign, the nobility became more powerful, and the University of Moscow and the Academy of Fine Arts in Saint Petersburg were founded. Imperial Decree Signed as Czarina of Russia, March 2, 1737, Saint Petersburg, 1 page, 12¼ x 8 in. In Russian, to the Patrimonial Chancery, commanding that her confessor, the priest Feodor Yakovlev, be paid his salary of 120 roubles, as well as supplies of rye flour, oats, and hay for his horses. Lot 1838		Russia. 10 Rubles, 1757-SPB. Bitkin-51; Sev-227; Fr-123. By Dassier. Elizabeth. Large finely modeled bust of Elizabeth facing right with her hair pulled tightly back over a tiara, with St. Petersburg mintmark below. Reverse: Standard design, a cross of four shields. Well struck with considerable mint luster. Jaques Antoine Dassier (1715-59), the son of famous medallist and coin engraver Jean Dassier (1676-1763), was in his own right a leading luminary of 18th century medallic art. From 1740 to 1745, he was assistant engraver at the Royal Mint in London. After a 3 year sojourn in Russia, where he produced the dies for Elizabeth's silver rouble and her gold ten roubles, he died in 1759 at Copenhagen. His designs are among the most interesting and attractive of the period and now much in demand. Extremely rare and likely the finest quality specimen in private hands. PCGS graded AU-58. Lot 1839		Russia. Novodel Pattern 5 Rubles, 1755-SPB. Fr-114; Bitkin-H401; Sev-185. Elizabeth. Weight 8.4 grams. Bust of the Tsarina wearing a small crown; mintmark below. Reverse: Large St. Andrew Cross over crowned double headed eagle. Quite sharply struck with brilliant prooflike surfaces. Very slight die rust is noted on both sides. The first letter of the mintmark has been recut several times. This interesting coin is part of an experimental series of four 5 rouble patterns having slightly different design details and struck in two diameters. The smaller version at 23 mm utilized obverse 2 ducat dies without the obverse mintmark. The larger type in 25 mm size uses this obverse with the mintmark below the bust. Both size types exist with somewhat different reverses. One variation has a large Saint Andrew cross on the eagle without the shield, as this specimen, while the other uses a small Andrew cross on a shield which is superimposed on the eagle. They are cataloged as Severin 183 to 186 and Bitkin H398 to H401, all R3. Extremely Rare, R3 with 4 to 9 pieces extimated to exist. Lot 1840		Russia. Ruble, 1741-SPB. Bitkin-158; Diakov-16, 3; Sev-1683; Uzd-0760, Elizabeth. Long bust type. Elisabeth seized power on December 6, 1741, so 1741 dated issues are necessarily very scarce. This graceful type was replaced with the broad bust type which was used until 1754. Beautifully toned. Lot 1841		Russia. Ruble, 1757-SPB YaI. Bitkin-189; Sev-1686; Dav-1680. Rare portrait type with dies executed by Jacques Dassier, only issued for a few months. There are two reverse dies, one with, and one without the initials under the eagle, this example being the former. Due to an imperfect planchet, some of the design details are not fully struck up, such as the Czarina's ear and some of the hair directly above it and the lower gown details to the right of the mintmark. On the reverse, the left center shield and lower left parts of the eagle are soft due to some planchet thinness at those points, with the left initial just barely visible. That being said, we must admit that this beautiful Dassier designed ruble is one of our favorites in this sale because of its amazing originality. It is a wonderfully fresh coin with virtually complete original mint luster. The surfaces are clean and very slightly reflective with no post-production defects. But for the few areas mentioned, the strike is quite acceptable expressing the designer's intent.
