1849-D. NGC AU Details, improperly cleaned. Well struck and a rather nice looking coin despite an old cleaning. Only 10,945 struck. Following several years of relatively high production (in the context of the Dahlonega Mint), the quantities for the 1849-D quarter eagle were more modest. Three die pairs were on hand in Dahlonega, but how many die varieties exist has not been researched. As a class, 1849-D $2.50 pieces are elusive in all grades (PCGS # 7754) .
Estimated Value $1,000 - 1,100.

Lot 1199
1851-D. PCGS graded EF-40. We note a mark on Liberty's neck. Mostly untoned. Only 11,264 minted of which only 120 examples are estimated to have survived.

The circulation of 1851-D Quarter Eagles was extensive, with the result that the typical specimen encountered today is apt to be VF or EF, only very occasionally higher. Douglas Winter comments poignantly: "In my opinion the 1851-D is one of the more undervalued Dahlonega quarter eagles. It usually trades in the same price range as the 1849-D and the 1850-D, but it is scarcer, especially in high grades such as AU or better."

The date logotype is deeply impressed into the die, giving the numerals a bold aspect. Pop 10; 59 finer (PCGS # 7761) .

Lot 1209
1855-D. PCGS graded MS-63 CAC Approved. Boldly struck and sparkling with mint luster. A Premium Quality coin for this given grade. This is the finest example we have ever auctioned. Pop 1; none finer at either service. Only 60 examples are estimated to have survived. While 1856-D quarter eagle gets all the movie-star applause and publicity, the 1855-D is an issue with an appearance and distinction that is easily identifiable to even the least specialized collector of Dahlonega gold coinage. This piece has a strike that is typical for the issue, with moderate (but not excessive) weakness seen at the borders. Many of the denticles are not fully formed on both sides. The centers are actually much better well defined on this specimen than on lesser quality examples, with some strong individual detail seen on the hair and feathers. LIBERTY on the headband has a somewhat granular appearance from where the metal did not completely fill the recesses in the die. A few of the hair curls below the ear are also slightly ill-formed. Stars, however, are excellent. The eagle shows sharp wings, arrowheads, leaves, with normal soft features in the center. The surfaces have wonderful luster and texture to them, free of marks, and consistent with the unbelievable MS63 grade. This is a very pleasing example of a date not known for its eye appeal.

Only 1,123 pieces were produced. It was once believed that the 1855-D quarter eagle was the rarest Dahlonega gold coin, but the 1856-D quarter eagle took top honors twenty-five years ago and has held that spot. Which is not to overlook the fact this is still a rare coin in all grades, and pretty much unavailable above About Uncirculated unless one gets released from a Great Collection. A star-quality offering for the Top Connoisseur in this series (PCGS # 7776) .

Die Characteristics: Date logotype very deeply impressed into die. Very slightly doubled at lower left of final digit. Logotype very close to dentils, about twice as close as to the neck truncation above. Raised die lines are seen around much of the rim, particularly on the right side of the coin. On the reverse the D mintmark is high. The center is about half filled diagonally with part of the arrow feather. As is true of many if not most Dahlonega coins, the master die was driven deeply into the working die, creating a very bold relief and resulting in the lowest arrow touching the bottom of the final A (AMERICA).
Estimated Value $50,000 - 70,000.

Lot 1212
1858-C. NGC graded MS-63. Well struck for this issue and full of satiny mint luster. Only 9,056 struck. A satiny matte-like specimen with resilient underlying luster and lovely toning highlights. From center to periphery, the coin is generally well struck with just a hint of soft design in the area around the shield. Sometimes collectors expect an early branch mint coin of the 1850s to be like clay in the palms of the press operators who manufacture such coins, turning out one perfect specimen after the next. But it was a difficult task to generate consistent quality in the atmosphere of a hardworking mint establishment. The main problem facing Charlotte (and also Dahlonega) was a shortage of experienced staff who had to be drawn from the rural surroundings in which these mints were built. The mint's equipment was up to the task, don't think it wasn't. When these two branches were erected in 1835-38, they were equipped with all the latest equipment. But it takes more than machinery to tweak and fine tune a minting press. We should be thankful that a few really choice, frosty pieces like this 1858-C quarter eagle exist and can be acquired today. Pop 4; none finer (PCGS # 7787) .

1862-S. PCGS graded MS-63+ CAC Approved. A wonderful specimen that should be graded even higher, thus a Premium Quality for the grade. Only 8000 minted of which merely 80 examples are estimated to have survived. This specimen is well impressed throughout, and fresh-gold patina adheres to bright surfaces on each side. A few minute contact marks are noted, but do not distract. a memorable piece that will long linger in the mind of anyone who views it.

San Francisco Mint quarter eagles of this era are rare enough in such grades as AU or even MS-60, but at the MS63 level they are so elusive that a span of years may elapse between our offerings of them regardless which date you are considering. Such pieces were not used in large bullion shipments, as $20 pieces were easier to count. Rather, these saw extensive service in everyday commerce. Pop 1, the finest known specimen (PCGS # 7798) .

The date on the obverse is very deeply punched and well centered. On the reverse, the S is barely clear of the arrow feather. The smooth frosted character of both obverse and reverse, together with some original die finish marks, suggests that this must have been retrieved from a bank quite early on. It would be interesting to surmise that this was purchased as a gift by someone who visited the San Francisco Mint, as the annals of mint history reveal that this was the most popular of all denominations for a holiday gift giving (such commentaries relate to the Philadelphia Mint early in the 20th century, but no doubt appropriate to other mints and times).

Historic Note: In 1862, while the Treasury Department was no longer paying out Philadelphia Mint quarter eagles at par due to exigencies of the War economy, on the West Coast, in San Francisco, freshly minted coins were placed directly into commerce. As explained in some detail in the book, The Treasure Ship S.S. Brother Jonathan, the West Coast operated on an entirely different monetary system during the Civil War--with scarcely a Legal Tender note in circulation in San Francisco, but many gold coins in evidence. On the East Coast just the opposite was true: paper money abounded, and silver and gold coins were hoarded, nowhere to be seen.
Estimated Value $25,000 - 30,000.
