Lot 1143		1796. Stars on obverse. NGC graded MS-61. Untoned with semi reflective surfaces. Only 432 struck. Interesting clash marks on both sides as made. A healthy dose of heavy golden luster enlivens the broad expanse of open surface on this With Stars Quarter Eagle struck the first year of issue. The fields are free from wear though do carry the odd mark or lint mark from its passage down through the years, for so modest a grade as MS61 it is very presentable. What's more, the strike is bold enough to warrant special attention. Careful scrutiny with a magnifying glass reveals the following minor points: a few tiny marks in the field to the left of Liberty; a slight depression in the field on the reverse above the arrow points with raised die polish lines above STATES (they occur behind the denticles and so are counted as an artifact of the die making process); no copper staining or spots, which is always a plus; a thin pin line from Liberty's lovelock to the throat; and a virtual 100% absence of adjustment marks. Rims are outstanding. In addition, the coin possesses a nice, clear-cut strike for all areas with outstanding detail at the hair and cap, the eagle, as well as all stars and legends. Despite its occasional poor cousin relationship to the No Stars one-year Type, advanced specialists in early gold realize the rarity of this issue in any grade and its desirability in Mint condition! Pop 6; 4 in 63, 1 in 65 (PCGS # 7647) . The stars are arranged 8 x 8 on this 16-star With Stars Quarter Eagle. Breen described the variety as "very rare," noting that the 432 pieces of the issue were delivered on Jan. 14, 1797. The newer Garrett-Guth Gold Encyclopedia says, "This subtype is somewhat rarer than the 1796 No Stars quarter eagle, yet it generally sells for much less in comparable grades. Most examples are in circulated condition, with a cluster at the About Uncirculated level that may represent some unreported resubmissions. Mint State examples are extremely rare; included among them is a single gem example. Late states of the dies show heavy lapping to remove clash marks." The present specimen appears to be from early in the BD Die State e, the last state recorded in Dannreuther. It shows extensive cracks from star 1 through 8, and many others per the reference. The R in LIBERTY is quite strong (which is contrary to many observed examples where the R is decidedly weak to nonexistent), and die clash marks are noted on both sides. Brilliant yellow-gold coloration is present on both sides, as noted. For the early gold specialist, the significance of this incredible and historic early U.S. gold coin needs no further explanation. Lot 1144		1804. 14 stars on reverse. PCGS graded EF-40. The wear is evenly spread with some minute adjustment marks noted on the reverse borders; all, lightly toned. Only 3327 coins issued for all the varieties. For a long time collectors have admired and enjoyed early quarter eagles, one of American numismatics� favorite series among gold coins. The "early" issues can be defined as beginning in 1796 and ending with the 1834 With Motto, issued just before the Classic Head was introduced. Here is a very presentable Extremely Fine coin, a piece that is far above average in strike, and superior to that offered in recent times. The present example has some light adjustment marks through the central definition of the reverse, yet the entire coin is just about as sharp as is ever seen. Slight softness is noted at obverse stars two through seven. A bit of lustrous surface visible around the stars and legends. Splendid eye appeal overall. Pop 10; 61 finer. Rare (PCGS # 7652) . Lot 1147		1834. No motto. PCGS graded EF-40 CAC Approved. Lovely antique golden-orange toning. The authorized format on the Half Eagle was reduced from 135 grains to 129 grains via the Act of June 28, 1834. This was put into effect on August 2, 1834, and coins struck on and after that date were of the new light weight. The hope was to return gold coins to circulation. They had been extensively exported. The strategy proved successful; it was no longer profitable to melt or export coins for bullion, and gold coins circulated at par for the first time since the War of 1812 (PCGS # 7692) . Lot 1148		1835. NGC graded MS-63. A nice frosty coin. This head style has the first curl, at upper left, much smaller than previous styles. Liberty's head is smaller than before. This was the final modification prepared by William Kneass, with Christian Gobrecht taking responsibility the next year. This delightful choice example has frosty devices and satiny fields. Both surfaces are brilliant with lots of bold detail at the stars and rims. A touch of striking softness is noted on the high points of the obverse around Liberty's ear, but most other design features are sharp including the majority of the eagle's feathers. Lot 1150		1836. Script 8. PCGS graded MS-64 CAC Approved. A very choice example and of Premium Quality for the given grade. A nice deep impression with frosty surfaces which are slightly reflective at the borders; all, delicately toned. The Classic Head quarter eagles of 1834 through 1839 are finely made, well styled for the period, and popular to collect by date and by mint. There being no "impossible" rarities, the earnest buyer can hope to acquire a nice representative collection given a bit of diligent searching. This is not to say finding pieces in choice Mint State is easy. When such an opportunity occurs, a specimen is likely to be dated 1834, the first year of issue. While the 1836, as here, registered a higher production quantity, the design was no longer a novelty, and few were set aside as souvenirs. The obverse and reverse are richly lustrous, subtle light yellow gold. The striking is quite sharp around the borders, less so at the centers, this being typical. A few toning areas are seen here and there on both sides as already noted. All told this is one of the nicer 1836 quarter eagles to come on the market in the present decade. It will answer well a call from the specialist, the Script 8 in the date adding appeal. Similarly, it would be a grand addition to a choice type set. Pop 14; 2 finer in 65 (PCGS # 7694) . Lot 1151		1836. Script 8. PCGS graded MS-61. A pleasing frosty untoned example. The Classic Head quarter eagles of 1834-39 are interesting and popular to collect by date and mint, there being no "impossible" rarities. However, finding pieces in Mint State can be a challenge. When such an opportunity occurs, a specimen is likely to be dated 1834, the first year of issue. While the 1836, as here, registered a higher production quantity, the design was no longer a novelty, and few were set aside as souvenirs. The obverse and reverse are lustrous with subtle light yellow gold. The striking is quite sharp around the borders, less so at the centers, this being typical. All told this is one of the nicer entry-level Mint State 1836 quarter eagles to come on the market in the present period. A well struck example with a ample display of original golden luster beneath the toning, both sides balanced as to color and detail. Indeed, this Quarter Eagle was nicely socked by the dies, if readers will permit a colloquialism, perhaps not fully so at the eagle�s body, but still well enough that its attraction is enhanced. Lot 1162		1839-O. SEGS graded MS-63. Our grade is Sharpness of MS-60+, we note some light hairlines. This piece exhibits an the usual sharpness of strike for an early date Quarter Eagle from the New Orleans Mint, and there really is no significant lack of detail to report. Satiny in sheen with gleaming golden color, the surfaces are also praiseworthy, barring the light hairlines, due to a general lack of sizeable or otherwise individually distracting abrasions. The first Quarter Eagle issue from the New Orleans Mint, the 1839-O is also the only O-mint strike of the William Kneass-designed Classic type (to include also the Classic Half Eagle). It is a scarce issue in an comprehensive sense with Doug Winter (2006) accounting for only 350-400 survivors from a mintage of 17,781 pieces. Only 17,781 minted of which merely 400 examples are estimated to have survived. 1839-O, being the first Quarter Eagle struck at the New Orleans Mint, is scarce, with the typically encountered grade being VF or, occasionally, low-end EF. Any coin in EF45 or finer grade is a rarity. At the time, the numismatic community--consisting of no more than a couple hundred widely scattered enthusiasts at most--took no notice of mintmarks, and not even the Mint Cabinet saved specimens (PCGS # 7701) . A highly important variety. Douglas Winter wrote that no true Mint State pieces are known, and that fewer than a dozen were known at the AU level, seemingly clustered.
