Space Shuttle "Columbia.", STS-1 FLOWN Flag and Patch. Space Shuttle "Columbia" FLOWN U.S. Flag and mission patch. The flag (7 ½" x 12") and patch were both flown aboard the first shuttle mission, STS-1. Commander, John Young and Pilot, Bob Crippen launched on April 12, 1981 for 2 days of performance and safety checks on the orbiter. They landed at Edwards Air Force Base April 14th. The pair comes with a NASA certificate authenticating the items. The embossed seal reads "National Aeronautics and Space Administration". The flag shows a bit of wear but overall a nice combination for a historic flight.

STS-2, c1991, 16mm "B Print" Movie Film Reel. These two, 800 foot reels (with DVD transfers depict a motion picture compilation of pictures from STS-2 through many other shuttle landings, crews, President and Mrs. Reagan and transport of the shuttle on top of the 747 aircraft. the only Shuttle landing at White Sands, N.M., etc. A signed/typed consignor's coa plus a similar unsigned/handwritten coa are included. A nice lot.

These original crew negatives were rejected – it is safe to say these are each one-of-a-kind.

These 2 negatives show Weitz, Bobko, Peterson and Musgrave in their "F-Troup" uniforms complete with props – flag, bugle, rifle, sword and western hats. The crew photography sessions take about 4 hours and various views and positions are photographed. After the photographic team and crew review the best images, proofs are printed and then the "Official Crew Portrait" or in this case "spoof" photo is selected. Finally the rest of the scenes are discarded. These original crew negatives were both rejected so they are each one-of-a-kind. What a great pair.

STS-7 Shuttle Flight Crew 4 x 5" original color negative – first woman in space – "outtake". The crew of 5 (Crippen, Hauck, Fabian, Ride, Thagard) is seated in front of a print of an old 3 masted ship under full sail. This was the first American space mission to include a woman, Sally Ride. The crew is in their NASA jump suits. Shuttle flight crews had several variations of their "Official Crew Portrait" taken, then after the final shots were selected the rest were discarded (due to slight imperfections). It is those "imperfections" that make these outtakes totally unique.

Her helmet is in front of her and an American flag is displayed behind her. Impressive photographs of the first mother in space. These photography sessions take about 4 hours and various views and positions are photographed. After the photographic team and crew review the best images, proofs are printed and then the "Official Crew Portrait" is selected. Finally the rest of the scenes are discarded. These original negatives were not selected and thus none were ever printed for circulation.

STS-51D, 1985, NASA JSC Color Crew Photographs. A fascinating lot of 8x10" JSC color photos. There is a Slezak signed, handwritten COA included that reads: "The making of a crew picture! STS-51D final crew photograph and an alternate crew picture and a humorous crew photograph". There are a total of six photos plus a final negative included. Slezak was the photographer of the crew photo. Only one final photo (S85-25871) is marked with an ID number. The others are blank or marked "Sample" in red ink. A signed/typed Consignor's COA is also included. A n unusual lot.

STS-51-L Challenger’s Final Flight -- Flight Crew 4 x 5" original color negative – "Graduation outtake". As every other flight crew does the crew of STS-51-L sat for an official crew portrait. At the time no one knew this flight would end in disaster. In addition to their more formal photos the crew decided to sit for a portrait in graduation outfits complete with mortarboard and tassel. This was to highlight one of their crew members, Christa McAuliffe and the "First Teacher in Space" program. This outtake includes back-up teacher Barbara Morgan who ultimately flew on STS-118 (and does not include Greg Jarvis). The negative is in a protective paper NASA sleeve that reads "No. 17, TEACHER, Other Doll" The doll refers to an item being held in the photo by McAuliffe. A powerful and unique photograph.

STS-51G Shuttle Flight Crew 4 x 5" original color negatives – "outtakes". Two photos. One of the original crew as in the previous lot. The second is of the crew that flew the mission. Baudry and Al-Saud were the new crew members. Their names were added to the bottom of the crew patch replacing Jarvis and Walker. Both are one of a kind and make a very interesting combination.

STS-71 Flags - vacuum sealed for flight and likely flown. 5 flags (2 American, 3 Russian) in a vacuum sealed flight pouch with "DON PUDDY" written across the top in marker. These flags were given to Puddy by Norm Thagard in an envelope with N. Thagard written in the upper left and "Don Puddy Bld.1" below. Puddy and Thagard worked closely on the "Shuttle-MIR Docking Program". Thagard was launched on MIR 18 and retuned on the Shuttle Atlantis (7/7/95) after spending 115 days on MIR. The flags were given to Puddy upon his return and placed in his safety deposit box until recently. A consignor’s COA states that -- to the best of my knowledge these flags were carried by Norm Thagard on STS-71/Mir 18 mission.

STS-71 / MIR EO-18 Likely FLOWN, 2 straps and EVA Wrist Mirror. These are 3 pieces of Russian space equipment used during EVas. Included are 2 straps and a wrist mirror which is used when a Cosmonaut is fully suited allowing him to see behind or to the side. These 3 items were used by Gennadi Strekalov aboard MIR. He launched in Soyuz TM-21 (3/14/95) and returned via Atlantis STS-71 (7/7/95). They were presented to Donald Puddy by Aleksander Aleksandrov as a small token of thanks for the long hours they spent together on the "US/USSR Crew Exchange Program". There is a notation on the face of the mirror. As best we can determine it reads "with unprecedented respect for Nitcole in our joint …" Included is the envelope they were sent to Puddy in with "best wishes Alexander" notated. Also, a COA from the consignor. A very interesting lot.

STS-71 Space Shuttle-MIR Docking Mission. Color poster autographed by 8 crew members. The poster measures (18 x 24") with a large photographic rendering of Atlantis docked to MIR. Combined they formed the largest spacecraft placed in orbit at that time. The joint US/Russian mission helped to prepare the way for further cooperative space ventures, specifically the construction of the ISS.

STS-71 Space Shuttle-Mir Docking Mission. 5 color photos of the Shuttle approaching and docked to MIR (11 x 14"). Three of the photos have descriptions on the rear that read in part, 1) "A Russian proposed alternative configuration of the Shuttle/MIR docking", 2) "The commander’s eye view of the MIR is shown in technical rendition", 3) "A technical rendition of the Shuttle docked to the Kristall module of MIR". Included is a copy of the "work request job #6993" signed by Donald Puddy. Puddy was actively involved in this mission as a co-chair of one of its working committees. Also included are 3 color 8x10" photos frame #'s 23, 27 and 30, showing the crew (specifically Bonnie Dunbar) signing the log book after the flight. The photos come in the original Kodak film box. A striking collection.

Shuttle – Official NASA Negatives of Husband and Wife Shuttle Astronauts – "3 Different Outtakes". Astronauts Robert L. "Hoot" Gibson and his wife M. Rhea Seddon sat for an official NASA photo session. The couple is standing next to a model of the Shuttle, with a US flag behind and to the left? As with other NASA photo sessions the final shots are selected by the crew and the rest discarded. It is those "imperfections" that make these outtakes totally unique.

  Shuttle – Official NASA Negatives of Former J.S.C. Director – Gerald Griffin – "3 Different Outtakes". As with the Shuttle crews he oversaw Griffin sat for an official NASA portrait. In these outtakes, all different, Griffin is sitting with an American flag in the background. Griffin was Director of the Johnson Spaceflight Center from 1982-1986. He was also the Lead Flight Director for Apollo12, 15 and 17. As with the other negatives in this sale these are the only copies of these specific exposures.

Shuttle Program, c1970s, "WET-F" Warm-up Jacket. This striking red/white acrylic warm-up jacket (zippered front, elastic waist, unsized (small?) was made by Dolfin Corp, Shillington, PA was used in the JSC Water Emersion Test Facility to take the chill off after submerged training or filming in the large pool used to simulate weightlessness. There is a large "J.S.C." lettering stitched onto the jacket back. Only about 15 of these jackets were made (and probably only 1 or 2 saved after all these years) for use by astronauts and WET-F personnel. Excellent condition and the first this writer has ever seen. A signed/typed Consigner's COA is included.

Shuttle Program, c1980s, Mission Patches. Lot of eight different "Manufacturer Sample" mission patches (assorted size) as sent to Director of Crew Operations Donald Puddy by H/P Enterprises of Lompoc, CA as examples of their work. We note patches from "NOAA-J", "FAST", "Hitchhiker", "Special Payloads Division", "SAMPEX", etc. patches included in the lot. These patches were all in the same sealed plastic pouch as received (included, but opened for photography and lotting). All have an H/P Enterprises label attached to the back. We can't determine if these are in issued form or not. A note enclosed in the pouch read: "Some of our recent NASA work". A great opportunity for the patch collector to acquire patches from the original source.

An interesting lot including an 800 foot 16mm. film reel "Threshold of Opportunity" (+ DVD transfer) showing scenes from 1961 (Shepard) through Mercury, Gemini, Apollo (including moon landing), ASTP and into the Shuttle Program. A consignor's unsigned/handwritten coa is included. The lot also includes an STS-51D crew-signed cachet launch cover (one of seven obtained by the consignor), A B-19 "initial flight" cachet cover, etc. An unusual lot.

Expedition 8, 2004, Leaded Glass Oval Picture Frame (7x9") This clear leaded glass rectangular picture frame has an oval picture cutout (4.5x6.5") in the center. There is a paper insert in the oval, in honor of astronaut Foale, station commander and cosmonaut Kalerie (engineer). There is a fixed glass "foot" on the base to enable the frame to stand upright. We normally would not have run this as a separate lot, but thought it was quite unusual as a piece of space memorabilia. It deserves a good home with a picture of your favorite astronaut(s) inserted in it.

Miscellaneous, 1969, "12th Annual Goddard Memorial Dinner" Program (7x11") The front page of this program reads: "To Mitch" and is signed by Barry Goldwater and Thomas J. Heyden, Jr. The program lists the consignor as being awarded the Robert H. Goddard Historical Essay Award at the dinner, presented by Dr. Wernher von Braun, for his essay "Development of the Lifesaving Rocket". An important award that has not been publicized all that much. Unusual and interesting.

Many space related items including toys, 2 records" First Man on the Moon" (45 RPM) and "Moonlighter (Revell 33 1/3 RPM), a colorful souvenir plate with all Apollo patches, 10 first day covers of various space stamps plus multiples of 4c Mercury, a large size presentation binder "America's Conquest of Space" from the Postal Commemorative Society - with 13 pages each highlighting a US space stamp and the history behind it (all postmarked 7/20/79, the 10th anniversary of the first lunar landing). A few highlights include: a Franklyn mint sterling silver proof "medallic" first day cover commemorating the Apollo - Soyuz test project (Russian cancellation), A collection (nearly complete) of 27 limited edition medals from The International Mint - "History of American's Men In Space", several very small sterling silver "coins" issued by the Franklin Mint containing silver carried aboard Apollo 14 on its voyage around the moon. A medallion featuring Comet Koheutek (1973), an Apollo 12 medallion (brass colored), and a similar one for ASTP in a display stand. Plus many more. This lot deserves a close look.

Von Braun, Wernher (1912-77) German-American rocket pioneer. He led Nazi Germany's rocket development program, then became the father of the American space program. A 1974 letter from von Braun to Mitchell R. Sharpe at NASA/Marshall Space Flight Center and a copy of the 6-page document which was signed by von Braun and Walter Dornberger (1895-1980) after they were captured in Bavaria and interrogated at Garmisch-Partenkirchen about possibly continuing their experimental work for the U.S. Government. Von Braun's letter clarifies that Dornberger was the other signer of the document and adds, "…this must have been at the very beginning of our stay at Garmisch, as later on a very satisfactory solution was worked out." Very interesting content.
