1819 N-8 R1 Small Date MS60+. Lustrous medium steel brown with about 20% of the mint red remaining visible on both sides. Would deserve a choice rating except for a stain of dark toning at F-AM. Sharply struck EDS. Most likely from the famous Randall Hoard of mint state cents that was brought to light a few years after the end of the US Civil War. Comes with a nice provenance. 1826 N-5 R2 PCGS graded MS64 Red & Brown. Choice lustrous mint red fading to medium steel brown and light chocolate with at least 20% of the original bright mint red remaining visible on both sides. The only marks are a very faint hairline on the cheek, a shallow planchet flake on the truncation above the 1, and a bit of fine carbon inside the left half of the M in AMERICA. MDS with a rim cud break from star 5 to star 7. A beautiful cent in every respect. This piece is a new discovery that comes to us from a non-collector family that inherited the cent. No notable marks, but the luster is subdued by a thin layer of natural oxidation. It looks like this cent has never been brushed. May be a good candidate for a little professional TLC to bring out the underlying beauty. LDS. The lump between the T & A in STATES is gone and the die cracks on the reverse are strong. Satiny mint frost covers this cent, even the highest points of the devices, and the eye appeal is outstanding. The best identifying mark is a small spot nestled against the curl left of star 12. Nicely struck EDS (the N-8 die state). The fields are just starting to show fine radial flowlines and the dull die lines over ERICA are clear. A nice cent. Our grade is MS63. 1842 N-5 R3 Large Date PCGS graded MS63 Brown. Beautiful lustrous medium bluish steel brown and chocolate with 5% of the obverse showing mellowed mint color while 20% of the reverse is covered with faded mint red. The surfaces of this cent are satiny and it offers excellent eye appeal. The only notable defects are a couple light diagonal nicks between the end of the chin and star 2 and microscopic specks of darker toning around TED-ST. EDS, die state a, with very fine die lines at the throat and a microscopic die line from the dentils over the left side of the R in AMERICA. The top of a stray 4 is clearly visible in the dentils under the left side of the normal 4. A very nice example of this variety. Our grade is MS62, CC#6 in the Grellman census. A tiny spot of slightly darker chocolate brown toning at the dentils over the right top of the first T in STATES is a good identifying mark for this attractive cent. MDS, die state b. The arc line connecting the tops of the C & A in AMERICA is faint but visible and the fine repunching found on the 18 in the earliest state is gone. The surfaces are covered with satiny mint frost and the eye appeal is excellent. The only marks are a few small spots of darker steel toning, the largest of these at the dentils left of the 1 in the date. E-MDS, die state b, with fine die cracks at UNITED and ST but without a die crack through the base of the date. The central devices on both sides are softly struck as often seen on this variety. 1848 N-33 R5- NGC graded MS61 Brown. Frosty medium brown and light chocolate. No roughness or verdigris, but there are some nicks on the obverse, mainly on the jaw, neck, and bust tip. None of the marks is distracting but there are a few too many to ignore at this sharpness level. A dull diagonal nick on the jaw over the throat and two ticks on the bust tip are good identifying marks. Sharply struck EDS. The die lines at the inner curl are crisp. Our grade is EF40+ sharpness net VF35, tied for CC#10 in the Grellman census. Comes with a great provenance that includes 3 individuals who completed the Sheldon series of large cents, a very exclusive club indeed. The surfaces are smooth but there is a speck of crud under star 12 and a larger splash of darker olive crud on the leaves under OF. A dull circular nick or planchet flake between stars 12 & 13 can help identify this cent. EDS. The fine die lines in the fields on the reverse are present and there are no visible rim breaks. This is the discovery coin for the die variety, that being accomplished when Jules Reiver owned the coin. Our grade is VF30 net VF25+ and tied for CC#12 in the Grellman census. 1851 N-40 R5 AU50. Frosty medium steel brown and light chocolate with hints of underlying very faded mint color showing through in a few places on both sides. There is virtually no wear at all on this cent but both sides show several low spots where debris came between the dies and the planchet (most likely grease or oil used to lubricate the press mechanisms). Most examples of this rare variety come with similar low spots, but they are especially prevalent on this piece. The coronet at LIB is significantly blunted by a die clog. The only post-striking defect worthy of mention is a tiny speck of carbon in the field off the chin. EDS. CC#5 in the Grellman census. Estimate Value $350 - UP

A microscopic pinprick under the lowest point of star 12 and a tiny tick on the lower right part of the O in ONE can help identify this cent, but they are barely visible with a glass. M-LDS, die state c, with die clashmarks on both sides and a fine flowline from the left end of the base of the 1 to the space between two dentils. The stray 1 punched into the right side of the ear and the top of an 8 in the space right of the Y in LIBERTY are both easily visible (the so-called "Dartboard Obverse" variety). Our grade is AU58.
