Lot 1177		The Pittman 1797 Dime. NGC graded MS-66. An old saw perhaps, but it bears restating that JJP never bought junk, although he collected mostly in an era when collectors cared little for extra quality when it cost more. He also was famous for his "eye," and this coin, like many others of his, shows what a good eye he really had. Unlike most 1797 dimes, indeed most silver of this period, his 1797 had no adjustments marring its designs, had no problems with lack of detail, and wasn't "messed with." Thus it boasts really nice originality atop design elements that lack nothing in their details. Even the denticles are well defined. The obverse color is an oldtime, "set" gray with delicate amber highlights. While the obverse is a tad mottled, the reverse comes across as a miniature work of art. Standing upon its cloud, the eagle seems to peer at you, its nostril flaring, its eye piercing, and its talons grabbing at the illusion of firm ground. The original toning here is a delightful pale golden gray, with hues of lavender, all "backlit" with luster that seems a sun trying to emerge from a gloomy day. Because of this, the symbolism of the design seems even more intense than usual--that of a struggling yet fierce new nation seeking freedom and to emerge from its dark past. In a word, quite a coin, this JJP 1797 dime! Population: NGC has graded just this one piece MS66, and no others above MS64. PCGS shows a single MS66 of this variety, and no others above MS61 of the 16-stars variety. View details	Unsold
Lot 1178		1821. Sharpness of AU-55 but edge apparently damaged. Small Date. JR-9, Rarity-2. From the J.J. Pittman Collection sale (October 1997, Lot 551), where it was described thus: "Choice Almost Uncirculated … sharply struck and well centered with beautiful multicolored russet, greenish-gold and blue toning." All true. However, evidently the cataloguer missed what seems to be a repair on the edge below the date area. It's possible that this occurred at the mint, that it was caused by a faulty collar, but the rim also appears slightly trimmed. The toning at this area is so ancient that it's difficult to tell for sure. Examine it yourself, and bid accordingly. The surface images are beautiful nonetheless. View details	Realized $368
Lot 1179		1821. NGC graded AU-55. Small Date. JR 8, Rarity-2. Deeply toned and with blues and golds around the periphery. Well struck from the usual die state with heavy obverse swelling from stars one through three. A common variety in tip-top condition. The upper portion of Liberty's hair shows hardly any wear, and similarly the reverse shows wear atop the eagle's feathers only. View details	Unsold

Lot 1181		1851-O. AU-55. Untoned, and probably dipped in the recent past. However, this is a scarce date in high grades and is seldom found in any high grade. The devices are all sharply struck and the rims and fields reflect only the usual light circulation marks. An important opportunity for the Seated Dime specialist. View details	Unsold

Lot 1192		1889. NGC graded MS-66. A beauty! Bright orange-gold and light blue iridescent toning shimmers at the edges, obverse and reverse, centering to brilliance. Lot 1194		1893/2 overdate. NGC graded MS-66. Only one graded MS66 by NGC. PCGS has graded three. None higher by either service. While obviously here is a superb coin which is hard to equal, this piece is also graced by unusual eye appeal: deep reddish gold iridescent toning with a bright gray base color overlays cartwheel luster. Study this coin carefully and you will also discover that the strike is superlative--fully detailed in every way. A great overdate and a great Barber dime! View details	Unsold

Lot 1199		1900. PCGS graded Proof 68. This is the Finest Graded Proof by PCGS of this date. It is also the only Proof 68 graded by that service. NGC has graded 5 this high, with none higher. Somber gray toning on the obverse, with fiery orange gold at the centers. The reverse has a blaze of yellow on the lower right side and lilac colors above. Nearly perfect in its preservation, with abundant original color. This one needs to be reholdered, as there are several short dark hairs inside the plastic holder visible along the reverse rim. Lot 1201		1906-O. NGC graded MS-67. Here's a branch-mint Barber near the top of the Pop reports. NGC has given the MS67 designation to just 4 of these, with one MS68 out there somewhere. PCGS has found 3 to grade MS67, and none better. The deep toning on the obverse is a bit mottled here, with splashes of bright blue surrounding silvery gray and gold centers. The reverse has a superb appearance: bright blue iridescence on the periphery softening to silvery gold brilliance in the center. The strike is bold all over, and the New Orleans mintmark sharp. Lot 1205		One of the 3 Finest Known 1910-S Dimes. NGC graded MS-67. This is the Finest graded by NGC, and the only one in MS 67; PCGS has graded 2 this high, also with none graded higher. The toning on this coin is simply beautiful, the rims are toned russet to blue, with the centers a fiery rose-gold hue. Identical and perfectly matched color on the reverse. Not only is this tied for the Finest graded, but it is also a scarce, low mintage date. One for the specialist who demands the very finest indeed. View details	Unsold

Lot 1207		1916-D. MS-65 Full Bands. The key date to the Mercury Dime series in fully struck gem condition. A glass fails to locate the usual signs of contact; the fields, devices and rims are all clean and undiminished. The obverse has an original golden to brown tone, while the reverse remains untoned. Satiny luster abounds. Boldly struck throughout, with the central bands showing full separation. Only 264,000 were struck, some of which were saved, but most entered circulation in late 1916. Lot 1208		1916-D. PCGS graded AU-50. Big fat mintmark in the classic position. Nearly full bands, too. Dirty silver look with a decent amount of luster remaining. Really nice rims and reverse, while the "winged Liberty head" has little abrasions. Lot 1220		MS-66 Full Bands 1921 Dime. PCGS graded MS-66. One of the key dates to the Mercury Dime series, the 1921 Philadelphia issue is seldom found in gem condition. This one is a hair better, plus it has the further enhancement of a full band strike. PCGS has only graded 13 this high, with 2 coins graded higher. On this particular one we find frosty white surfaces, without a breath of toning, and untouched fields and devices.
