Lot Photo Description Realized
Lot 300
1793 S-11b R4 Wreath Cent with Lettered Edge and 2 Leaves following DOLLAR. VG-7. A few points sharper but there is very fine roughness in the fields and protected areas while the devices are smooth. No verdigris, and the only notable contact mark is a pinprick at the tip of the wreath stem left of the fraction. Cleaned and retoned a rather glossy steel and light olive brown with hints of underlying reddish brown that give away the earlier cleaning. There are a couple small splashes of silvery toning on the lower part of the neck and bust. The date is complete and easily readable but not strong and the legends are clear. The edge lettering and 2 leaves are bold. E-MDS, Breen state II.
Estimated Value $2,500 - 3,000.

Lot 301
1793 S-13 R4- Liberty Cap. VG-10. Sharpness VF25 but lightly corroded and there is dark greenish verdigris patinated over much of both sides suggesting this cent was lost in soil for a while. The highpoints of the design are smooth and the details are bold in spite of the imperfect surfaces. Partly glossy dark olive and chocolate with shallow greenish patination covering all but the highpoints. Nicely struck EDS, Breen state I. The date and legends are complete and bold.
Estimated Value $12,000 - 15,000.

1793 S-13 R4- Liberty Cap. ANACS graded Details of VG-8 Corroded. Sharpness VG8 or slightly better with corrosion ranging from extremely fine to moderate on both sides. No verdigris and only a few contact marks, including a trio of rim nicks under the bust tip and a long rim bruise over OF. The date is complete and easily readable and the legends are clear except for weakness at CE in CENT. Dark steel brown and chocolate. EAC grade net Good-4.
Estimated Value $5,000 - 6,000.

Lot 303
1793 S-13 R4- Liberty Cap. Fair-2. Dark steel and olive with chocolate highpoints. The surfaces are slightly rough and there are some old pinscratches down the portrait, but there is no verdigris. The date is weak but readable, as is the majority of the legend on both sides. There isn't much left to recommend this piece, but there is more than enough detail to attribute it as the S-13 variety, and it is a good filler for the elusive 1793 Liberty Cap design.
Estimated Value $1,500 - 2,000.

1794 S-20 R5. Fair-2. Head of 1793. A point or two sharper but covered with fine roughness. No marks or verdigris. The date is clear, strongest at the 94, and LIBERTY is readable. About a third of the reverse legend can be made out but it is weak. Dark chocolate and olive brown.
Estimated Value $150 - 200.

Lot 305
1794 S-22 R1. VF-35. Sharpness AU50 but the planchet is covered with uniform faint granularity that is mostly offset by the attractive frosty light olive and steel toning. No verdigris. The only marks are a few light nicks on the neck and cheek, and these are mostly lost in the toning and do not catch the eye at all. Nicely struck M-LDS, Breen state VII late. The "Mounds" on the reverse are strong and the designs are perfectly centered on the planchet. Not perfect but still quite nice.

Lot 306
1794 S-24 R1 Double Struck. Good-6. A bit sharper with some minor roughness and a few contact marks including a pair of dull nicks at the eye. Traces of waxy dark greenish verdigris can be found in the roughened areas, but it is not distracting. Rather glossy dark olive brown. LDS with heavy swelling in the center of the reverse that obliterates ONE CENT. This piece was double struck. The first impression was centered on the planchet and the second was 10-15% off center to K-11.5 creating two dates. The second date is weak but easily readable and the 4 from the first strike is clearly visible under the bust tip of the second impression. Additional evidence of the initial strike is clearly visible on both sides. There is a curved planchet clip under the date area as well, so this is a double mint error. Not the most attractive cent in this sale to be sure, but how often is a clearly double struck 1794 cent with 2 dates available in any grade?
Estimated Value $3,500 - 4,500.

Lot 307
1794 S-25 R3. Fine-12. Sharpness EF45 or slightly better but the planchet is covered with uniform very fine granularity on the obverse, uniform moderate granularity on the reverse. No marks or verdigris. Frosty dark steel and chocolate with darker bluish steel toning on the lower right part of the obverse. MDS, Breen state II. The 94 of the date is complete and easily readable but is relatively weak, as is OF AMER while everything else is strong. Struck slightly off center to K-4 which accounts for the weakness at the two areas mentioned.
Estimated Value $1,500 - 2,000.

1794 S-26 R2. Good-5. Sharpness VF25 but corroded, the roughness ranging from very fine to moderate. No marks or verdigris. The date is weakened by the roughness but it remains readable and the legends are complete. M-LDS, the reverse die cracks clear. Slightly glossy medium brown with traces of darker olive in a few of the protected areas.
Estimated Value $200 - 250.

1794 S-30 R1. EF-40. A lustrous nearly mint state cent that has a swipe of fine corrosion at LIBER and the top of the cap with similar fine roughness at the opposing area around UNIT and the fraction. There are a couple additional small splashes of similar roughness on the upper part of the reverse as well. The remainder of the planchet is virtually flawless and offers outstanding eye appeal. Just a hint of rub on the highest points of the hair design from uncirculated. Frosty chocolate brown with reddish chocolate tones in the slightly rough areas. Late die state, Breen state IV.
Estimated Value $250 - 300.

1794 S-43 R2. Good-6. Sharpness near F12 but slightly rough and there are a few rim bruises, the strongest one at the top of the reverse. Roughness nearly obliterates the 4 in the date but the remainder is clear. The legends are complete except for OF AMERICA, which was weakly struck. Glossy dark chocolate and olive brown. EDS.

1794 S-47 R4 Blundered Edge Letters. VG-7. A few points sharper with a dozen or so shallow pitmarks scattered over the obverse, mostly on the right side. There are additional similar marks on the reverse, but many of them appear to be shallow digs rather than pits. No verdigris, and the remainder of the planchet is smooth. Lightly cleaned and retoned glossy steel with chocolate toning in protected areas. The date and legends are complete and clear. MDS, Breen state II. The reverse is rotated 35 degrees CW from the normal head-to-foot orientation. In addition, the edge lettering is blundered with the FO in FOR positioned under the ED in HUNDRED.

1794 S-57 R1. EF-45. Five points sharper with a short vertical pinscratch down from the tip of a lower curl to the dentils below plus a few very light, barely visible rim bruises and tiny rim nicks on both sides, none notable or at all distracting. Very attractive lustrous light to medium chocolate brown with frosty lighter brown toning in protected areas of the reverse. A small spot of darker olive brown toning is located at the left foot of the L in LIBERTY. MDS, Breen state III. Excellent surfaces and eye appeal for the grade in spite of the minor marks. Called AU55 net EF45 by Bland. Noyes says AU50 net EF40. Comes with an impressive provenance.

1794 S-62 R4+. About Good-3. The obverse is weaker thanks to heavy burnishing that severely blunts the details on that side but the reverse is significantly stronger with many of the details approaching VF20 in spite of minor roughness. The date is faint but can be made out with a bit of effort and the reverse legends are clear. The obverse is mostly glossy medium brown while the reverse is darker chocolate and olive brown.

1794 S-65 R1. VG-10. Sharpness VF30 but the surfaces are covered with microscopic roughness, and the obverse fields were very lightly abraded in an attempt to remove a thin layer of verdigris. The abrasions do not alter the natural toning, which is a decent and rather glossy mix of dark chocolate brown with lighter brown highpoints. Nicely struck EDS, Breen state II. The date and legends are complete and clear.

1794 NC-5 R8. Fair-2. Sharpness VG7 with at least a half dozen rim bruises on each side, strongest at UNITED, and the planchet is very slightly bent. The surfaces are covered with fine granularity and there are traces of shallow dark olive verdigris in a few protected areas, strongest at the throat. The date is a bit weak but easily readable and the legends are mostly visible, although OF is gone due to roughness and AMERICA is faint from wear. Rather glossy medium brown and chocolate with reddish brown tones in protected areas. Called net Fair-2 and second finest of only two known in the Noyes and Bland census lists (and the other example is only marginally better with comparable defects). Noyes photo #31636. A rare opportunity to acquire one of the rarest die varieties in the entire Sheldon series.
Estimated Value $15,000 - 20,000.

1796 S-83 R4 Liberty Cap. Fine-15. Ten points sharper with extremely fine roughness covering the fields and protected areas while the devices are smooth. The only marks are small planchet chip or void (as struck) on the edge over the E in STATES and a small diagonal nick on the neck. Mostly glossy chocolate and steel brown, and the gloss helps offset the microscopic roughness.
