Lot 291		1850 C-1 Breen 1-A Rarity 6+ (as a proof). Proof 60. Lightly cleaned and covered with a very thin layer of lacquer or some similar protectant. No spots, hairlines, or other defects. The toning is an unnatural reddish tan and light bluish steel, and this color is unlikely to change with the lacquer shielding the surfaces. Nonetheless, the fields are nicely reflective and the strike is very sharp. EDS, Breen die state I for the proof strikes. Estimated Value $4,000 - 6,000. Lot 292		1853 C-1 R1. MS-60. Frosty steel and light olive blending into chocolate brown. The surfaces are satiny, and the luster covers even the highest points of the design. Possibly dipped long ago, but the toning appears natural and the eye appeal is excellent. The only defect is a trace of extremely fine roughness on the edge, probably due to being stored in an album for many decades. MDS. Estimated Value $250 - 350. Lot 293		1854 C-1 R1+. PCGS graded MS-64 Red. Lustrous bright original mint red mellowing to light steel on the highpoints, about 90% of the original color remaining. A solid gem if not for traces of an old fingerprint in the field before the neck and above the coronet. A tiny tick in the field close under the chin is the only contact mark, and it is visible only with the aid of a glass. MDS, Manley state 2.0 early. Comes in a slab with an old Green PCGS label. Lot 296		1857 C-1 R2. MS-63. Lustrous light greenish olive brown with faint overtones of light bluish steel. A very attractive "greenie." No marks other than a bit of slightly darker bluish steel toning at AM in AMERICA. The satiny luster is unbroken and covers even the highest points of the design. Great eye appeal for the grade. EDS. Lot 299		Blank Planchet for 1840-1857 Half Cent. AU-50. Attractive glossy light chocolate brown. No defects, only the usual collection of tiny planchet chips that usually disappear when the planchet is struck between coin dies. The rims are upset and ready for striking (Stage II). Diameter is 22.4 millimeters and the weight is 83.9 grains, both consistent with the standards. This is an example of Breen's type "C" planchet prepared by Crocker Brothers and discussed on page 471 of his half cent encyclopedia. Estimated Value $600 - 800.
