The only notable marks are a spot of fine carbon under star 11 and a small nick over star 3. MDS, die state b. The fine die lines over ER in AMERICA are gone but the die remains uncracked. A choice cent except for a couple tiny contact marks, including a horizontal nick left of the earlobe, a couple tiny ticks in the field at the chin, and a small nick on the truncation over the 8 in the date. Lot 387		1848 N-6 R1 PCGS Genuine, AU Details, Smoothed. Lightly cleaned and retoned glossy golden brown with frosty sea-green overtones. The only mark is a tiny planchet lamination in the curls that extends down onto the upright of the 4 in the date. LDS, die state e, with a small cud break on the left top of the M in MERI and the rim outside the crack through MER slightly raised as a retained cud. Our grade is AU50 sharpness net EF40. Lot 388		1848 N-9 R1 F12. Sharpness VF35 but there is an "X" scratched into the obverse with the center point on the cheek. The X is obvious, visible with an unaided eye. Otherwise the surfaces are eye appeal are nice. Glossy chocolate brown. Extremely rare M-LDS, die state c, with a shallow but clearly defined rim cud break over TE in STATES. Lot 390		1848 N-24 R4+ PCGS graded MS65 Brown. Lustrous light chocolate and steel brown with 5% of the original mint color showing on the obverse, 20% on the reverse. The only marks on otherwise choice, satiny surfaces are a barely visible nick on the jaw above the throat and a tiny wisp of dark chocolate "crud" between stars 6 & 7. This substance looks removable, but it's barely noticeable. MDS, die state b. The line up to the right from the top of the O in ONE is clear and a strong vertical line has been added inside the N in CENT. Called MS61 and tied for CC#1 in the Noyes census, his photo #55102. Lot 393		1848 N-33 R5- EF45. Another mint state example of this tough variety that was dipped and has retoned frosty light chocolate and olive brown. But this piece has some small splashes of darker olive brown toning on the portrait plus a small spot of very fine reddish carbon under the LI in LIBERTY. There are a couple tiny nicks on the chin and traces of microscopic roughness show on the rims on both sides. Sharply struck EDS. Not perfect but still tied for CC#7 in the Grellman census. Lot 394		1848 N-37 R4+ VF25. Sharpness EF40 with too many contact marks for the sharpness grade. Most of the marks are trivial but there is a relatively strong rim dent at ME in AMERICA plus a lighter rim bruise at the second A in AMERICA. Glossy light chocolate blending to darker chocolate brown in protected areas on the reverse. EDS. The die lines on both sides are clear. There are traces of very fine dirt in protected areas on both sides, a few faint hairline scratches on the cheek and neck, a tiny rim bruise at star 13, and another slightly stronger rim bruise at the bottom of the reverse. Decent eye appeal in spite of the minor marks. MDS, die state b. The die lines of the early state over UN are gone and there is minor swelling around the legends on the reverse, but the die remains uncracked. Tied for CC#7 in the Grellman census. The only marks are a very light contact mark right of star 1 and a speck of dark toning at the dentils above star 7. LDS, die state dd, with extensive crumbling on the reverse, including crumbling that nearly fills the bottom of the N in CENT. Lot 398		1849 N-4 R1 MS63. Frosty steel brown with 15-20% of the mint color remaining on both sides. This cent is covered with satiny mint luster and it offers excellent eye appeal for the grade. The only marks are a small, shallow low spot (caused by debris on the die) nestled under the hair bun and a speck of carbon between the bases of the O & N in ONE. M-LDS, die state c. Lot 399		1850 N-14 R4 PCGS graded MS65 Brown. Lustrous light to medium chocolate brown with very subtle hints of reddish chocolate brown overtones on the obverse. Traces of faded mint red remain visible on the reverse. The only marks are a couple microscopic planchet flakes near the hair under star 7 (as struck) and a few tiny spots olive brown dirt on the obverse, including one in the field close before the forehead and another left of star 13. The reverse is choice. Sharply struck VEDS, die state a early. This is a rare die state with smooth, hard fields and sharp die lines at the throat and over ICA in AMERICA. The surfaces are satiny and appear nearly flawless, but there are a couple very faint marks. These are an extremely faint diagonal hairline on the cheek and a very light pin scratch at the dentils over OF-AM. M-LDS, die state b late. Lot 404		1851/81 N-3 R1 51 over inverted 18 NGC graded MS63 Brown. Frosty steel brown and chocolate. The surfaces are dull thanks to a thin layer of oxidation that hides the luster, but a proper brushing should bring it back to life. No notable spots, stains or contact marks, but there is a hint of friction on the highest points of the designs. MDS, die state b. Lot 411		1852 N-8 R2 PCGS graded MS64 Red & Brown. Lustrous mint red fading to steel brown on the highpoints, 75% of the mint color showing, mostly on the obverse. The notable marks are a dark spot in the field under the outer edge of the hair bun and a planchet flake in the dentils off the tip of the wreath ribbon (as struck). Most of the neck is covered with a very shallow low spot caused by debris on the die, and a sliver of this low spot reaches down to the left edge of the 8. MDS, die state c. Faint die cracks reach from the tip of the coronet to the dentils over star 5 and from the lowest curl to the dentils below. The reverse is uncracked. The only notable mark is a small spot of shallow carbon on the peak of the 1. LDS, die state b. The fields are covered with strong radial die flowlines that create attractive cartwheel luster. The stray 4 punched into the hair just right of the ear is dull. Much of the neck is covered with a shallow low spot caused by debris stuck on the die (most likely lubricating grease from the press), and this low spot is common on the N-23 variety.
