1816 N-2 R1 AU50. Mint state sharpness but there are numerous tiny nicks on the left side of the obverse, none significant but too many for a mint state cent. The only other defect is a tiny planchet lamination at the dentil tips under the end of the wreath ribbon (as struck). Frosty bluish steel and chocolate with traces of very faded mint color peeking through in a few of the protected areas. E-MDS. The reverse is rotated 25 degrees CW relative to a normal head-to-foot die orientation. Estimated Value $200-UP

The surfaces are decent but extremely fine roughness covers the fields and protected areas under the rather glossy dark chocolate brown and steel toning. MDS with obvious swelling on the obverse that weakens ON and CE in ONE CENT, as usual on this rare variety. A decent example for the grade. Estimated Value $150-UP

The reverse is lustrous light golden olive and tan. While the obverse clearly looks like it was cleaned, the toning on the reverse appears to be original. No marks or other defects. LDS with a small but clearly defined cud break connecting the top of the O in OF to the rim above. Our grade is Mint State sharpness net AU55 for the cleaned obverse.
