Lot 231		1798 S-161 R2 Small 8, Style I Hair VF30. Nice glossy medium brown and light chocolate. The surfaces are smooth and there are only a few minor marks, including a faint scratch down the shoulder and a small patch of very shallow reddish roughness hidden in the hair at the shoulder. The only significant "defect" on this piece is the blunt strike on the portrait, which was caused by grease or other debris on the die when it was struck. Otherwise this piece is nearly choice. Lot 232		1798 S-161 R2 Small 8, Style I Hair VF20. Sharpness VF35 but cleaned and retoned glossy light chocolate brown with delicate overtones of bluish steel. No corrosion or verdigris, only light contact marks. The notable marks are several very light rim bruises on both sides, the strongest of these at IC in AMERICA. E-MDS, Breen state III. Lot 235		1798 S-164 R4 Small 8, Style I Hair F15. Ten points sharper but there is some extremely faint roughness in the fields and protected areas on both sides. There is no trace of verdigris, and the only evidence of corrosion visible without the aid of a strong glass is a small pitmark in the field off the tip of the nose and a very shallow pitmark at the left foot of the first A in AMERICA. The only contact marks are a rim nick left of the hair ribbon and a small rim bruise below the nick. The color is a very attractive glossy chocolate brown, and the toning effectively hides the minor imperfections. Has the sharpness and eye appeal of a higher grade. EDS, Breen state I. Lot 237		1798 S-166 R1 Large 8, Style II Hair VF30. Ten points sharper but lightly cleaned and retoned glossy light greenish olive and chocolate mixed with some lighter brown toning on the reverse. No roughness and only a few trivial contact marks. However, the strike was uneven leaving significant weakness on the bust and bottom of the 98 with similar weakness on the opposing S-OF and leaves below. LDS, Breen state VI. Ten points sharper but there is a dull scratch in the field before the neck, a planchet chip out of the cheek, a smaller one in the hair under the I in LIBERTY, and a short scratch under IBE. Frosty chocolate and olive brown with frosty lighter brown toning in protected areas on both sides. LDS, Breen state VI. The die crack arcing across the lower left quadrant of the reverse is strong. Lot 239		1798 S-166 R1 Large 8, Style II Hair VF25. Misaligned Dies. Sharpness EF40 but there is some extremely faint roughness under the rather glossy dark steel and olive toning. No verdigris, but there is a faint scuff of hairline scratches on the portrait plus a couple rim nicks before the portrait and a long nick on the bust. M-LDS, Breen state V, with an irregular rim cud break over STA. Struck with the obverse misaligned to K-2.5 and the properly centered reverse rotated 35 degrees CCW relative to the normal head-to-foot die orientation. Estimated Value $400-UP. Lot 244		1798 S-171 R4 Small 8, Style II Hair F15. At least ten points sharper with microscopic roughness in the fields and protected areas, strongest around the lower end of the hair ribbon and at the Y in LIBERTY. Even in those places the roughness is trivial, and the glossy olive brown and chocolate toning gives this cent decent eye appeal. A short scratch on the shoulder is the only notable mark. Lot 274		1800 Obverse Brockage, Style II Hair Fair-2. Rather glossy chocolate and olive brown. There is some very light roughness in protected areas and a few faint scratches in the recessed bust area on the brockage side, but basically this is just a well worn cent. No verdigris. This is a centered brockage strike with a rotation of about 30 degrees between the normal and incuse sides. The date is readable on the normal side but not visible on the brockage side.
