Lot 122		1793 S-14 R5- Liberty Cap Basal State-1. Slightly glossy dark olive and steel. The highpoints are smooth but there is minor roughness in the protected areas. No verdigris or notable marks, essentially just a well worn cent. The date is gone but about half of the legends can be made out. The die crack down through the E in LIBERTY is visible, and this helps confirm the S-14 die variety. An acceptable hole-filler for the tough 1793 Liberty Cap type. Lot 123		1794 S-17a R5- Head of 1793 AG3. A couple points sharper but burnished and retoned glossy chocolate brown and steel with darker olive brown toning in protected areas on the reverse. No corrosion, verdigris or notable marks. The date is weak but readable and the legends are nearly complete in spite of being weakened by wear and burnishing. The planchet is not perfectly round with a diameter that varies from 29 to 30mm, which is not unusual for this variety. The edge lettering is strong but incomplete, probably due to the planchet being out of round when it passed through the Castaing machine. Lot 124		1794 S-18b R4 Head of 1793 NGC graded VG Details, Damaged. Rather glossy dark chocolate and steel. The highpoints are smooth while very light roughness covers the fields and protected areas, strongest at the top of the reverse. No verdigris. A strong rim nick right of the date and a half dozen rim bruises on the reverse are the notable marks. LDS, Breen state V, with an obvious bulge at TED in UNITED. The date is weak but readable and the legends are easily readable even though a few letters are weak. Our grade is VG10 sharpness net G5. Lot 125		1794 S-18b R4 Head of 1793 AG3. A couple points sharper, especially on the obverse, but the planchet is covered with minor roughness that has been lightly smoothed. No verdigris, and the only marks are faint hairline scratches left behind from the smoothing. The scratches are well hidden in the toning and are visible only under strong magnification. Mostly glossy dark chocolate brown and steel. The date is weak but readable and more then half of the legends can be made out with some effort. Earlier die state, before the bulge at TED. Lot 126		1794 S-21 R3 NGC graded VF Details, Improperly Cleaned. Sharpness VF25 or better but cleaned with a mild abrasive that left microscopic hairlines covering both sides. The cleaning lightened the toning to a light brown, but it is far from "coppery" and the protected areas remain chocolate brown. The only mark of any significance is a thin crease in the planchet in the dentils over S-OF, as struck. MDS, Breen state III, with a die crack from the B to the cap. Lot 127		1794 S-22 R1 Off Center AG3. A couple points sharper but minor roughness covers the fields and protected areas on both sides while the highpoints are smooth. No verdigris. Medium brown and light chocolate fading to darker chocolate brown in protected areas. The highpoints are glossy and the date remains readable (although it is weak). Struck 5-10% off center to K-3. The only significant mark is a strong punch on the unstruck portion of the planchet over the D in UNITED. This indent may have been caused by the collar post of the coining press and not be post-minting damage. It looks quite similar to the collar post indent example of a 1793 C-2 half cent that was in the Davy Collection (our sale 9/19/2010:2). A short post was used to hold the coining collar in place in the press. It appears this planchet just happened to be positioned off center in the direction of that post, and the planchet was pressed against the post when it was struck by the dies. Lot 128		1794 S-26 R2 NGC graded XF Details, Obverse Damage. Slightly glossy dark olive brown with lighter chocolate brown toning on the highpoints. The surfaces are covered with very fine dirt that may be removable. The only mark is a small but obvious and rather deep dig in the field before the face. Lot 129		1794 S-27 R5 VG8. Sharpness F12 but covered with very fine granularity. No verdigris. The only marks are some fine hairline scratches on the portrait and in the field off the chin, all blended perfectly into the toning, plus a dig on the O in OF. Slightly glossy medium chocolate brown with lighter brown toning covering the devices and traces of darker olive brown in protected areas. The date is strong and the legends are clear. The contrast in toning between the devices and fields accents the designs and adds to the eye appeal. E-MDS, Breen state II, before any visible die cracks on the obverse. Lot 130		1794 S-28 R2 NGC graded Fine Details, Damaged. Slightly glossy dark chocolate brown and steel. The obverse displays some very fine roughness while the reverse is covered with moderate roughness. Hints of shallow greenish verdigris can be found in some of the protected areas, and the only notable mark is a dull scratch from the first T in STATES to the leaves below. EDS, Breen state I, before any die cracks. Struck slightly off center to K-4.5. The date is softly struck but remains readable. Our grade is F12 sharpness net G5. Lot 131		1794 S-28 R2 G4. The obverse is a bit better while the reverse is weaker, the G4 grade being a compromise. No roughness or significant signs of contact, but it was lightly cleaned and has retoned light steel brown fading to darker chocolate brown in protected areas. LDS. LIBERTY and the portrait are clear. The bottom of the date is weak but the upper half is easily readable. At least half of the reverse legends remain visible, although weak. Lot 135		1794 S-31 R1 G6. Blundered Edge ONE HUNDRED A DOLLAR. Sharpness VF30 but this piece was lost in soil for a while and is covered with uniform fine to moderate granularity. It has not been cleaned and still has powdery light greenish verdigris covering the protected areas on both sides. No marks and very little actual wear. The date and legends are complete and clear, and the edge lettering is strong. The edge lettering is blundered, a result of the mint worker failing to reset the casting machine to the null position before applying the edge lettering to this planchet. Lot 136		1794 S-32 R2 NGC graded VF Details, Corroded. Sharpness VF20 where properly struck up, but the right edge of both sides is softly struck due to the die faces being out of proper parallel alignment (a problem for this die variety noted by Breen in his large cent encyclopedia). The planchet is covered with very fine porosity under slightly glossy light olive brown and chocolate toning. No verdigris. The only marks are a small planchet chip at the rim right of the Y in LIBERTY and a barely visible rim bruise at TE in UNITED. E-MDS, Breen state II. Lot 137		1794 S-33 R6 VG7. Sharpness F12 but dull from uniform microscopic roughness. No verdigris or pits, and the only mark is a barely visible rim bruise at the first S in STATES. The date and legends are complete and easily readable except for ONE CENT which was obliterated by the usual swelling in the center of the wreath. Medium chocolate brown. M-LDS, Breen state V, with all 6 of the "Wheel spoke" die cracks on the reverse, but the final die crack from the cud above LI to the cap has not formed. A decent if imperfect example of this rare and very popular die variety, one of the keys to a variety set of 1794 cents by Sheldon number. Lot 138		1794 S-35 R5 NGC graded VG Details, Corroded. Sharpness VG7 with areas of very shallow porosity on both sides, mostly in the field before the neck. No contact marks or notable signs of verdigris. Rather glossy chocolate brown and steel. The date is weak but easily readable. The legends are readable as well, although the rim is starting to wear into the legend outside the wreath. M-LDS, Breen state VI, with a radial die crack from the rim through the cap plus a stronger one down through the E in LIBERTY into the portrait. Lot 139		1794 S-35 R5 AG3. Glossy medium steel brown blending to chocolate in protected areas around the devices. The surfaces are not perfectly smooth, especially in protected areas on the reverse, but they are quite decent for the grade. The only notable mark is a subtle dent just right of the F in OF, and this caused a minor bend in the planchet. The date is weak but complete and easily readable and half the legends remain visible as well. MDS, Breen state IV. Lot 140		1794 S-36 R5 G4. A couple points sharper but the hair left of the ear lobe appears to have been smoothed, perhaps to remove a contact mark, and similar smoothing as done inside the wreath. The planchet is mostly smooth but not perfectly so, and there is no verdigris. The notable marks are a small dig in the hair near the ear and a pair of short vertical scratches on the shoulder. Recolored glossy dark olive brown and steel. The bottom of the date is fading into the rim below but it remains easily readable, and the legends are essentially complete except for ONE CENT, which is nearly gone. Lot 141		1794 S-41 R3 NGC graded VF Details, Edge Damage, Corroded. Sharpness VG10 but covered with uniform very fine roughness. No verdigris. The rim was filed into the dentils right of the Y in LIBERTY and into the opposing dentils over ICA in AMERICA, but none of the designs were affected. Slightly glossy medium brown on the devices with dark chocolate toning in the fields and protected areas. The date is weak but easily readable and the legends are clear except where affected by swelling in the center of the reverse. M-LDS, Breen state VI. The radial die cracks through the D in UNITED and A in STATES are strong and swelling obliterates ON and most of CEN in ONE CENT. The reverse is rotated 30 degrees CCW. Our grade is net VG7. Attractive glossy medium brown and light chocolate with dark chocolate toning in protected areas around the devices. This cent offers nice eye appeal in spite of the repair before the neck. Lot 146		1794 S-48 R5 Starred Reverse VG7. Sharpness at least F15 but lightly corroded with areas of shallow pitting, mostly on the obverse. No verdigris and only a few notable signs of contact, including a rim bruise under the 1 in the date and another left of the lowest curl plus one at the top of the reverse. Cleaned and retoned a slightly glossy medium reddish chocolate brown and steel. The date and legends are complete and easily readable. The dentils are clearly defined on both sides and all the tiny stars are present, although a few are hidden under dentils, as always. MDS, Breen state II late, with a subtle bulge at ON, CEN, and RI. Far from perfect but still decent for this famous "Redbook" variety, and having a complete rim on the reverse is a big plus. Obviously this is a difficult cent to grade due to the obvious defects, and it has been net graded anywhere from G6 to F15 by serious numismatists over the last 60 years. But as any serious student of large cents knows, nearly all examples of the famous "Starred Reverse" variety are net graded due to defects. Comes with a nice provenance. The surfaces are decent but not perfectly smooth with very faint roughness under glossy olive brown and chocolate toning. No verdigris, and the only signs of contact are some faint hairline scratches hidden in the toning on the cheek and highpoints of the hair, all visible only with the aid of a glass.
