Lot 251
1847 N-38 R1 MS62+. Lustrous light steel brown with hints of bluish steel overtones and 25% of the mint red remaining. Would rate a slightly higher grade if not for a small scuff on the rim over star 7 and a tiny rim nick under star 13. MDS, die state c (Newcomb's old #16). Clear die clashmarks show at the neck, throat, and chin. The die lines from the main and inner curls are gone and the dull waves at D and ST are missing as well (all removed by die lapping). DWH #2082.
Estimated Value $300-UP.

1847 N-39 R3- MS63. Choice lustrous bluish steel brown with 10% of the red remaining on the obverse, 25% on the reverse. A small, very faint scuff barely breaks the mint frost in the field over star 12 and there is a tiny hairline under the N in ONE. Otherwise this cent is flawless. Great eye appeal. MDS, die state a late. The fine parallel die lines through O in ONE are very faint. Tied for CC#2 behind a marginally finer piece in the Grellman census. DWH #2083.
Estimated Value $400-UP.

1847 N-41 R3+. PCGS graded MS-64 Red & Brown. Glossy light olive and chocolate brown with 20% of the original mint color remaining, mostly on the reverse. Nice eye appeal, just a few small marks from choice. The most obvious defect is a tiny spot off the left point of star 13, but there are a few light contact marks on the cheek and chin as well. A faint planchet lamination is hidden in the dentils over the U in UNITED. The strike is decent but slightly weak on a few of the stars and on the coronet over LIB. MDS, die state b. The fine die line from the E in AMERICA to the dentils above is clear but the earlier line connecting the bases of the U and N in UNITED is gone. Called MS61 and CC#1 in the Noyes census, his photo #31673. Our grade is MS60+, CC#2 among only 3 mint state pieces listed in the Grellman census. Population 2; none finer at PCGS. Only 3 total graded at PCGS; the other is MS64 Brown. DWH #3573 (PCGS # 37365) .

1847 N-42 R6+ Proof-Only. PCGS graded Proof 65 Red & Brown. Mint red fading to bluish steel brown with subtle overtones of iridescent rose and half the original color remaining. The fields are deeply mirrored and free of notable hairlines. There is a tiny speck of carbon at the dentils under the 8 and a small spot of darker steel toning on the rim at star 12. A barely visible planchet cutter impression shows on the outer edge of the rim below the 18 and at the left of star 1, and a tiny planchet chip is located midway between stars 12 & 13, all as struck. A beautiful proof cent that offers outstanding eye appeal. Called proof-64 in the Bland census and Proof-60+ in the Loring list. Our grade is Proof-64, tied for finest known honors with two other pieces in the Grellman census. The attribution and Dan Holmes provenance are noted on the PCGS label. 1847 N-43 R8+ (Unique) Repunched 1 F15. Sharpness VF20 or slightly better with very fine microscopic porosity covering most of the planchet. There is a small nick close under the chin, a dull rim nick over star 8, and another right of star 12. Slightly glossy olive and steel brown. Completely free of verdigris and all the attribution points are clear, including the repunching at the base of the 1. This variety was discovered by Fred Borcherdt in 1989 and verified by Bob Grellman in August of that year. The variety combines the earliest state of the N-30 obverse with the earliest state of the N-7 reverse. Both dies are distinctive and easily identified, but no additional examples have been found. The variety was announced in Penny-Wise and featured in several editions of the widely distributed Cherrypicker's Guide (by Fivaz and Stanton). In spite of the publicity and ease of identification, this example remains unique. One of only two unique die varieties in the late date cent series (the other is 1851 Newcomb-42, and both are from marriages of dies used to strike other varieties). A highlight of this outstanding collection. DWH #2084.
Estimated Value $5,000-UP.

Lot 290
1848 N-18 R4. PCGS graded MS-62 Brown. Frosty steel brown and light chocolate with frosty luster remaining in some of the protected areas. A hint of slightly darker toning is found around stars 8-10. A pair of shallow but significant scrape marks are located on the upper part of the neck reaching to the jawline, but this cent is choice otherwise. Rare LDS, die state d, with two parallel bisecting die cracks across the obverse. The first extends from the dentils just below star 3 almost horizontally across the portrait to the dentils just above star 11. The second and final crack reaches from the dentils left of star 1 through that star and lower bust touching the top of star 13 to the dentils under star 12. Only 9 examples are known with both cracks, and this is the finest of that small group in both the Noyes and Grellman census lists. Called AU50 and tied for CC#2 overall in the Noyes census, his photo #55101. Our grade is net EF45, tied for CC#5 overall but finest of the late state by a wide margin in the Grellman census. Ted's envelope has a note stating that, according to Homer Downing, "R8, only 3 known, a real NC; latest state of dies. Unique." We have uncovered a few more since then, but none finer than this one. PCGS population 1; the finest example graded at PCGS for the variety. DWH #3574 (PCGS # 171276) .

1848 N-19 R6- Proof-Only. PCGS graded Proof 65 Brown. Attractive bluish steel brown with slightly faded mint red covering the protected areas. The fields are highly reflective with moderate to deep mirrors and no noticeable hairlines. The portrait is frosty, and the contrast with the reflective fields offers a subtle cameo look. A spot of reddish brown toning high on the neck is the only notable mark. Sharply struck. The fine repunching above the base of the 1 and under the second 8 is clear. A choice example that offers outstanding eye appeal. Called Proof-62 by Del Bland and Proof-60+ by Denis Loring. Our grade is Proof-63, tied for CC#3 in the Grellman census. 1848 N-26 R5 EF45. Choice lustrous light steel brown. Just a bit of light wear on the hair at the ear, but everything else is consistent with a higher grade. The extra wear at the center of the obverse is caused by the central bulging always seen on this obverse, a result of excessive lapping during die preparation. The only defects, and they are trivial, are a small spot of reddish brown toning in the center of the cheek, a tiny rim nick at star 6, and a splash of reddish brown toning at TAT in STATES. Rare LDS, die state c, with a sharp die line added through the stem end. Great eye appeal for the grade.
