1847 N-18 R5 Repunched Date with Large 7 over Medium 7 F15. Ten points sharper but the obverse is covered with light nicks, none distracting but too many for the sharpness grade. A tiny rim bruise over the second S in STATES is the only notable mark. Glossy dark reddish chocolate brown with extremely fine porosity covering the obverse. This roughness is visible only with the aid of a good glass and it is effectively hidden by the glossy patina. No verdigris. Extremely rare late die state, die state c, with clear rim cud breaks from below the 1 in the date clockwise to star 2. The date repunching is clear, including the so-called "Large 7 over Medium 7" feature. CC#2 of only 6 known in this die state, and the cuds are weak on several of those pieces. A gem cent if not for a splash of olive toning covering the ear and surrounding hair details. Otherwise this cent is free of any spots, contact marks, or other defects. Even with the obverse splash, this cent still displays 80% of the bright original mint color on the obverse and 90% on the reverse. MDS, die state b early. The die crack at ME is present but very light (Newcomb’s old #40), and the fine die lines at the inner and main curls are dull but visible, as are most of the reverse die lines (Newcomb’s #21). (Note: The George H. Clapp "Newcomb-25" in the American Numismatic Society collection was called "N-25 Proof" by Howard Newcomb, but it is a misattributed "Newcomb-42" proof-only die variety. That coin is accompanied by a notation in Newcomb’s unique handwriting calling it a proof strike of his #25 variety. The crack at ME to the dentils over the adjacent letters is clear, the clashmark at the chin is weak but still visible, and traces of the die lines from the inner curl remain visible, although they are weaker than those on the preceding example, perhaps due to the die clogging.
