Lot 51
1795 C-5b R4 Thick Planchet G5. Sharpness VF20 but granular with numerous pits scattered over the obverse. No verdigris or contact marks. It appears this piece experienced very little actual wear, but the roughness weakens most of the details. Recolored light to medium brown but the pits are dark olive. Not an especially attractive example, but lots of detail for the net grade. Struck on a cut-down large cent planchet weighing 111.0 grains.
Estimated Value $100-UP.

1795 C-5b R4 Thick Planchet AG3. Clipped Planchet. Smooth and free of any notable defects, just heavily worn. Lightly cleaned and retoned a slightly glossy medium brown and light olive blending to olive brown in protected areas. The date is faint at best but LIBERTY and at least half of the reverse legends remain readable. A curved planchet clip (the curve of the clip matches that of a large cent) reaches well inside the dentils off the chin and the opposing ones at AMER. Struck on a cut-down spoiled large cent weighing 101.5 grains.
Estimated Value $100-UP.

1795 C-6a R2 Without Pole F15. Struck over a 1794 TALBOT ALLUM & LEE (TAL) Cent with NEW YORK. Sharpness VF30 but the rims were carefully rolled creating a high rim around both sides (for no logical reason at all). Otherwise this piece is very attractive, nearly flawless. The only mark is a faint vertical planchet flaw in the field before the portrait. Glossy chocolate and olive brown. The date and legends are all strong. Struck on a cut-down 1794 TAL Cent with New York. The "RK" of YORK is visible at the dentil tips well left of the date. That is the only clearly visible undertype. EDS, Manley state 1.0, without any hint of swelling right of the Y in LIBERTY, although this is the plate coin in the Manley book for his state 2.0. Weight 77.4 grains.

LDS, Manley state 2.0 with minor swelling in the field right of Y. Double struck. The first strike was 10% off center to K-9 and the second was centered on the planchet. Clear evidence of the first strike shows on the right of both sides, strongest on the reverse. Weight 72.2 grains.

1795 C-6a R2 Without Pole VG10. Struck over a 1794 TAL Cent with NEW YORK. Sharpness VF20 with numerous small rim nicks and bruises around both sides, the strongest of these well left of the date. In addition there are a few fine scratches on the obverse but the remainder of the coin displays smooth, attractive surfaces. Nice glossy chocolate and olive brown. Ample evidence of the TAL Cent undertype remains visible, including the "RK" of YORK just left of the date. MDS, Manley state 2.0 early. Just a hint of swelling shows right of the Y. Weight 88.3 grains.

A light rim bruise left of the bottom of the cap is the only significant contact mark. Rather glossy dark chocolate brown with lighter brown and chocolate toning on much of the obverse (possibly the result of a very light cleaning). EDS, Manley state 1.0. 1795 C-6a R2 Without Pole G5. Struck over a 1794 TAL Cent with TAL Cent edge letters showing. Sharpness F12 but covered with light to moderate corrosion. No marks or verdigris. Rather glossy dark olive and steel. The date and legends remain complete and readable in spite of the roughness. Struck over a 1794 TAL Cent. The half cent planchet was cut out of the TAL a bit too close to the edge. This left part of the TAL Cent edge lettering on an out-of-round half cent planchet. A 1794 TAL Cent has edge lettering that reads "PAYABLE AT THE STORE OF" followed buy a few ornamental designs. This half cent has "OF" and one of the ornaments clearly visible on the edge above LIB and the cap. While it is relatively common to find TAL undertype on half cents of this variety, it is extremely rare to find one with some of the TAL Cent edge lettering. Weight 83.0 grains.

1795 C-6a R2 Without Pole G5. Sharpness considerably better where properly struck up, but the lower part of the obverse and upper part of the reverse were very softly impressed leaving little or no details in those areas. It appears the die faces were out of proper parallel alignment, and the result is a piece with no hint of a date and TATES OF extremely faint. The surfaces are covered with very fine roughness under a rather glossy chocolate and darker olive brown patina. No verdigris. A rim nick over TA in STATES is the only significant mark. Weight 80.1 grains.

1795 C-6a R2 Without Pole G5. Double Struck over a TAL Cent. Glossy uniform dark chocolate and steel, possibly retoned. Smooth and attractive. Just a few minor marks, including a rim nick above the E in LIBERTY. Double struck, but the only clear evidence of the double strike is at ICA where an extra CA is located about a millimeter from the normal CA. In addition there is strong undertype from the TAL Cent near the rim before the portrait and at F-AMERICA. The date is faint but can be made out with some effort and the legends are complete, although STATES is weak. Weight 80.4 grains.

Glossy chocolate brown with smooth surfaces. The 5 in the date was distorted by the dent but the date is still readable and the legends are clear. 1795 C-6a R2 Without Pole G5. Flipover Double Strike. A couple points sharper where properly struck, but both sides are covered with fine roughness. No verdigris. The notable marks are a strong rim nick opposite the chin and a thin planchet crack (as struck) off the bust tip. Boldly double struck and flipped over between the strikes. The bottom of the wreath and entire fraction are clearly visible before the chin of Ms Liberty and UNITED shows where the date should be. The only evidence of the obverse from the initial strike shows where "OF" would be located on the second reverse, and there you can see the top of the cap followed by LI just to the right where AM should be. A dramatic mint error in spite of the relatively low grade. Weight 75.1 grains.

A small, very shallow pit that contains traces of reddish verdigris is located in the field near the dentils before the nose, and this is the best identifying mark for the coin. The only contact marks are some barely visible hairline scratches under the date and in the field off the bust. Glossy reddish chocolate brown with lighter olive and chocolate toning on the devices. Looks better than it might sound. EDS, Manley state 1.0. This is the Breen plate coin for his state III and the Manley plate coin for his state 1.0. There is a small spot of greenish verdigris on the jaw and several more on the reverse. The reverse is also covered with myriad hairline scratches, all blended into the natural patina. There is not much of the reverse design remaining, but the bottom of the wreath can be made out with a bit of effort, and the ribbon surrounding the fraction is relatively narrow, which is diagnostic when compared to the reverse used for the more common 1802/0 C-2 variety. In addition, there is bold undertype from a badly off-center large cent, including a half dozen dentils and a complete "S" from STATES where AMER would have been on the half cent reverse. Not pretty, but nearly all of the known examples of this rarity are low grade with significant problems. Weight 72.4 grains.
Estimated Value $2,000-UP.

1802/0 C-2 R3 Overdate 2 over 0, Reverse of 1803 G6. Glossy steel and chocolate. Smooth with only a few marks. These include some very faint hairlines on the portrait and a beveled edge off the bust tip (which may be from a cut-down large cent planchet). MDS, Manley state 3.0. The curl left of the date is open and there is obvious die rust (tiny lumps) around the date. Possibly struck over a cut-down spoiled large cent indicated by a depression in the field near the rim before the face. The date and overdate are bold and the legends are complete.
Estimated Value $500-UP.

1802/0 C-2 R3 Overdate 2 over 0, Reverse of 1803 G4. Struck over Spoiled 1802 Large Cent. Sharper by at least a point but there are a dozen or so small contact marks on the top of the head into the field before the portrait. The remainder of the planchet is smooth and quite nice for the grade. Glossy chocolate brown and steel. M-LDS, Manley state 4.0. Extensive die rust is visible on both sides. The date and overdate are clear and the legends are complete. Struck over an off-center 1802 large cent. Only a small piece of the struck cent made it on to the half cent planchet (at LIB and the opposing area at NIT), but the lower half of a "2" from the large cent is boldly impressed over the N in UNITED. What were the chances that a definitive piece of the large cent date would make it to the half cent planchet--and survive so clearly? Good for us.
Estimated Value $500-UP.
